The Iris Mural was designed during May 2014 and painted onto a wall outside the classics centre over summer 2014. Iris was chosen since the East Oxford Community Classics Centre is run by The Iris Project. As the Greek goddess of the rainbow, who brings messages between realms, she is a perfect symbol for the role of the Centre which aims to bring classics to life in vibrant and colourful ways. She is directing the way into the Centre and her rainbow is filled with letters from the Greek alphabet. Beneath her, you can see the iconic Oxford city skyline.
She also points the way to the Roman mosaic constructed by Cheney students as part of an EOCCC project. This mosaic is displayed, inside the Lane building, and depicts another version of Iris.
